By JONNY G. BERMAN, M. D. (CBS/AP) -- The most expensive drugs on the market are not cheap. They may be the most expensive of all medications. And the prices of some of these drugs can go as high as $2 to $4 a pill. (In this case, that's $500 a pill.)
There are no pills in the United States that cost more than $1 a pill. And while prices may be higher for those who buy the drug at a lower price than they are for those who buy the drug at the higher prices.
"I think people are very, very confused," said Dr. Bierman, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Bierman said that the only drug on the market that has a higher price tag than a pill is antifungal. And it's not a drug for allergies. It's a drug for "immune system problems," he said.
"We're trying to make this drug more affordable and not have people just paying the prices," Dr. Bierman said. "We have a long list of options that people can use to get the drugs they need. They can go to a pharmacy, to get them to do a quick checkup, and they can buy it from their doctor."
The cost of a pill could be even higher than the price of a pill. The drugmaker makes up about 30 percent of the drug market. The company said that its prices are about double what the United States pays for drug prices.
Bierman said that while the price of the pill might be higher than the price of a pill, the drug's quality is comparable.
"In terms of quality, it's just like any other drug that's kind of like a generic," he said. "It's like any other drug that's kind of like a drug for allergies."
In addition to the cost of the drug, the drug company also pays for the cost of a few other items that make up about a third of its total cost.
